![]() When it comes to late second-gen Firebirds, the Smokey and the Bandit Tans-Ams steal all the attention. Probably for the best, since in this writer’s opinion, butter-yellow interiors really only work on Lincolns, Cadillacs, and Imperials. Unlike its predecessors, the Yellowbird’s cockpit was tan instead of color-keyed. The Yellowbird that followed in 1980 would be the last of the series. Red Birds also featured color-keyed wheels and interior trim and special striping but were otherwise just like other Firebird Esprits. Building on the Sky Birds’ success, a Red Bird replaced it in 1978 and it ran through till the following year. The exterior was enhanced with optimistic-looking striping specific to the car. Sky Birds were a lovely pale blue hue and had color-keyed interiors and snowflake wheels. Gender equity aside, the cars were very attractive. However, the 1970s were a very different time. From today’s vantage point, it’s very easy to dismiss Pontiac’s marketing of a pastel-colored, not very fast, car to women as misogynistic and patronizing – and it was. These would be the so-called “Color Birds,” the first of which, the Sky Bird, was shown in 1977 and sold well. They could also be specified with that most 1970s of options, T-tops.Ĭapitalizing on the fashion-forward mood of the day, Pontiac designed special versions of the Firebird aimed specifically at women, who it was estimated made up 30 percent of Firebird buyers. They were usually bedecked with creature comforts like tilt-wheel, air conditioning, and other luxuries like extra sound insulation. Given their role, Esprit’s powertrains varied depending on the year, but they couldn’t be ordered with Trans-Am level engines. The Firebird lineup had its own personal luxury touring car, the Esprit. ![]() The 1970s were glory days for personal luxury coupes, even the humble Pontiac Sunbird (sibling to the Chevrolet Monza) could be ordered with a quarter-vinyl roof and other broughamizations. ![]() Secondly, the clean coupe shape of the cars responded better than most to the installation of federal impact bumpers by using a molded one-piece bumper-cum-nosecone. Handling was good across the lineup, too, thanks to “Radial Tuned Suspension,” as betokened by a plaque on the dash of Firebirds and Trans-Ams. First, even though power was down, a 6.6-liter Trans Am was still among the quickest cars of its day. The car is fully optioned with the removeable hardtop and the folding convertible top along with driving comforts including power steering, brakes and seat.Pontiac countered this assault in several ways. The final touch was the addition of Thunderbird wire wheels. Father and son removed the body from the frame and completed a ground up show quality restoration on the Thunderbird. Bob Houston’s son was a body man and painter. The Thunderbird had been purchased by Al Brett’s co-worker at the Harmac Pulp Mill in Nanaimo. ![]() Two daughters and a son and a career in the paper mill saw the years fly by. A year later, Gerry sold the car to buy the lot where he and his contractor father would build the couple’s first home. The Thunderbird became the wedding car when Gerry married LaFern in 1985. Al Brett convinced Gerry to repaint the car in its original Torch Red colour. The two-seat Thunderbird convertible made quite a statement at the local high school where Gerry would pick up his girlfriend LaFern. ![]() ![]() I booked including breakfast, and you get a coupon in that case. Something to be aware of: the kitchen closes early – my only choice left was a Cesar salad – and I had to negotiate a little to get it (9:45 PM). The decoration is typical Indigo style – read: with a big photo as wall paper, cozy interior. The bathroom has no bath, ‘only’ a shower, but that is perfectly fine for me. The rooms are very big, clean, with excellent bed. ![]() Apart from that: the hotel is really nice, located in an older building. I was surprised by this high level, opened google maps and found out there is a parking tower just aside the hotel. I made a reservation in this hotel, and received an email later stating parking is valet only and 38$. Overall, the stay was fine, but I think there may be better options to stay in Downtown Dallas. No "Do not Disturb" or "Please Make Up My Room" sign in the room. Bed was only made once and none of the soaps etc replaced when empty. The hand sanitiser next to the main elevator on the ground floor remained empty for my entire stay, which made me doubt the "IHG Clean Promise". At night locals appear to like revving their cars loudly and creating a lot of noise, and as the hotel room windows are not soundproofed, this could be problematic for light sleepers, or those who don't like loud, obnoxious cars. As mentioned, the information provided by reception relating to the restaurant was incorrect. No information provided in room, such as information on food and dining, laundry or general hotel information. Reception suggested I go to an Irish bar around the corner for dinner. This was despite the information provided at check in that it would be open daily for dinner. Some negatives: The restaurant and bar was closed on two of the three nights I stayed. There isn't much else around other than car parks and office towers. You can walk to Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum. If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Again we deeply apologize for the inconvenience, and hope you will give us another opportunity to serve you in the future. If this was not done we will reach out to them. In addition to this should have also refunded any monies you paid them. Again this was told to, who you booked the reservation with. We did not have rooms with two beds available, and we would not have been able to fulfill the bed type, even if we did not relocate you. The hotel had to contractually fulfill its obligation. To further explain what happened, the hotel has a Multi-year contract with a group, that has been in place since 2017. That is not something the hotel would do and would be considered unethical. This was not about cancelling reservation to make more money as you noted. ![]() Which looked like she was able to get you are the element. Dawn did step in to try to assist, in the rebooking process with another hotel that assisted us with this issue. Normally when we notify a third part booking agent, they are supposed to contact you and move your reservation without our interaction, as you booked the reservation through them not us. They were no much help in the relocation process. We did notify, which is who you booked the reservation with. This error allowed rooms to be booked, despite the hotel being sold out. Unfortunately we are having to relocate guest, due to a computer error. Good afternoon Q5121Hpnacyo, I am deeply sorry for this experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() I hope this article helped you! Sandie Rinaldo interviewed Rick Hansen recently about marking the 50th anniversary of the accident. I gave him time to be alone with his thoughts, until he motioned, he was ready to talk. I am supposed to be the dispassionate objective journalist, but I am also human and I knew this time of reflection would be extremely difficult for Rick. On the morning of the anniversary, as I watched Rick manoeuvre his wheelchair into position across the road from where his body had smashed down on the toolbox, I found myself anxious and concerned over how it would be for him to be there reliving the moment. “When you're in a situation like that, you're overwhelmed, you're in shock, you're in disbelief, and you have this big, dark canvas of despair, right? ” Several days later, after being transported from the local hospital to a facility near Vancouver, Rick got the devastating news. Most of all, as he waited two hours for the ambulance to arrive, he was furious at himself for not listening to his mother.Īll he could think was how disappointed his parents, especially his mom, would be. Rick Hansen and Sandie Rinaldo talk about how he felt in the days and weeks following the accident.Īt first he panicked, couldn’t breathe then he got angry, lashing out at Don and the driver. It was so bizarre how deep down inside it was this sense of I'm in trouble.” Everyone else was relatively unscathed, but Rick couldn’t move his legs. Rick told me the moment happened in slow motion. He had come crashing down on the toolbox. The next thing Rick remembered was flying off the back of the truck and landing hard. Rick was perched atop a large toolbox when suddenly and without warning, the driver lost control of the vehicle as it rounded a corner. After getting up early Rick ignored his mom’s warning and hitched a ride on the back of a pickup truck with his friend Don.Īlong the way, Don asked to switch seats so he could lie down and sleep. On that fateful day, a father of a friend had promised to drive the teens back to their hometown of Williams Lake in the interior of BC. He had been on a fishing trip with two buddies. There were witnesses all those years ago and the story has become the stuff of legends, passed from one local resident to another and another.Īs we talked near the side of the road, cars and trucks whizzed by, some taking the corner at such a fast speed, I couldn’t help thinking how easy it would be for one of them to lose control and careen off the road, exactly as it happened to Rick We actually pointed out the spot to him after a farmer down the road shared the information with CTV News. He wasn’t even exactly sure where it was. ![]() Rick has written about that day, but told me he had never stopped at the scene of the accident. I’ve interviewed Rick several times over the years, but it wasn’t until we met up again in the spring of 2023 to record a segment for “Sandie Rinaldo’s 50/50” fifty of my favourite interviews over the course of my 50 years at CTV, that Rick told me he was marking the 50th anniversary of the accident by visiting the place where his life had changed irrevocably. Speaking of the cast members which consists of the brothers themselves from oldest to youngest-Bill,Mark,and Brett)along with Stephanie Edwards,Ronny Graham, and Katie McClure. ![]() The show itself was very quick pace since "The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show" was a mixture of "Laugh-In" by way of "Sonny and Cher" with a mixture of the mischief that came from The Marx Brothers movies of the 1930's. It had basically the same comic writers that wrote for "Sonny and Cher" not to mention the same comic "bumpers" Sonny and Cher did between light songs by the Hudson trio, who were related to each other not to mention some of the goofy sketches(for example,Rod Hull had a hand-puppet emu, which attacked any cast member that made fun of it). The show however, was taped in Toronto,Canada(and was produced there as well)then was transferred with much of the cast to the Saturday morning schedule that was due to the believed appeal of variety shows that were made especially for children, and the Hudson Brothers show was just that. On the strength of that series, the show quickly made the jump from prime time to the overall abyss of Saturday Mornings.
